Allison Stroman - August 9 marks International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples. In December 1994, the United Nations chose August 9 in commemoration “of the first meeting of the UN Working Group on Indigenous Populations of the Sub-Commission on the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights held in Geneva in 1982”. The theme for this year is “‘Protecting the Rights of Indigenous Peoples in Voluntary Isolation and Initial Contact’”. Allison Stroman - As clothes gain more wear, they can develop holes, worn areas, rips, and broken seams among other signs of wear and tear. Instead of throwing these clothes away, mending your own clothes restores them to wearable items that you can add personal touches to. These on-of-a-kind touches allow your favorite pieces to stay in your closet for longer or they can give new life to a piece that might get thrown out otherwise. Join us in learning more about upcycling and mending from Miyu Shan, Upcycling Design Trainee, Summer 2024.
Allison Stroman - In an industry with high costs and seemingly too many options, disabled and plus size people face barriers to finding clothes that fit their bodies and needs. Additionally, finding items to fit one’s personal style is an entirely different challenge as many inclusive items do not have the same colorful, fun, and joyful vibe that straight size clothing has. That being said, there are many innovators in fashion dedicated to creating fun, functional, and comfortable clothing for a wide range of people.
Allison Stroman - According to Carolyn Mair, PhD, founder of the psychology of fashion department at the London College of Fashion at the University of the Arts London, feeling comfortable in what you are wearing decreases stress. This decrease in stress frees up more space for us to focus on the tasks important to us.
