Allison Stroman - August 26 marks the anniversary of the day women were given the right to vote. That being said, “[a]s late as 1962, some states still prevented women of color from voting on contrived grounds” and further legislation was finally passed in the Voting Rights Act of 1965 to protect Black women’s right to vote. In December 1994, the United Nations chose August 9 in commemoration “of the first meeting of the UN Working Group on Indigenous Populations of the Sub-Commission on the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights held in Geneva in 1982”. The theme for this year is “‘Protecting the Rights of Indigenous Peoples in Voluntary Isolation and Initial Contact’”.
